How to create a Frosty Window Effect
This simple tutorial is going to help you create a very nice looking frosty window. This will come in handy when you want to recreate a winter effect and it will add something realistic to your photographic works. There are many things and objects that you can apply frost to and hopefully you will be able to use this tutorials in many ways. Whatever your reason is to create a little bit of winter in your designs, you have come to the right place to figure out how to do it.
Step 01:
To create our icy window we need to find a picture to use as a background. It can be anything so I am going to use this one from the Herrsching Castle. Lets open it in Photoshop to get started.
Step 02:
Now lets create a new layer Layer-New Layer and using the Bucket Tool lets fill it white. Now lets add a Layer mask clicking on Layer-Layer Mask-Reveal All. This Layer Mask is the layer that will provide us with the frost for our window panes.
Step 03:
Load your Brush palette and load number 36. Select the Brush Tip Shape Option and move the spacing a little to make the brush “break”. For the rest of the settings, the defaults will work just fine. Make sure you have the Layer Mask selected before going to the next step.
Step 04:
Now we are goin to draw the frost effect by drawing an asterisc where we want the opening. Start with a cross and then continue with crosses until you have drawn an asterisc. Now concentrate in the middle part and remove all the ice from the middle part until you have something like the picture below.
Step 05:
If you want to see it in use, copy or draw the picture of a window on top of everything. GO back to the layer mask and start clearing the window panes individually. Once you have cleared the windows, Reduce the Layer Mask’s opacity to 80 or 90 % or as needed.
