Add a layer of rust to any metalic surface
In this tutorial we are going to learn how to create a very natural looking rust layer. You start with a metal picture and then we find a texture with cracks in it to age the metal even more. Once you are finished, you will not be able to tell if the results are real or not. You can tweak the steps as you go so you can obtain the color and textures that you need. You can co from just a little bit of rust for color to a completely worn out decaying piece of metal.
Step 01:
In this tutorial we will learn a technique to add rust to any metal object you want. There are many techniques out there but this one is very simple and you get great results. Open your picture in Photoshop to get started. Duplicate the layer Layer-New Layer if you need to save an original of your picture.
Step 02:
Now lets add some noise to our picture by clicking on Filter-Noise-Add Noise and add noise as appropriate.
Step 03:
Now we need to find a cracked texture to add a little more character to our effect. An old cracked wall or anything like my picture would work just fine. Open it in Photoshop and then using the Move Tool, drag it onto the metal canvas.
Step 04:
We will also add a little bit of noise to this picture as well clicking on Filter-Noise-Add Noise.
Step 05:
Change the Blending color to Hue or Soft light. You can play with the other modes as well to see if any of them renders the color and texture appropriated to your picture. If necessary, enhance the color clicking on Image-Adjustments-Hue/Saturation.
Step 06:
And a new layer of rust has been created on our metal surface. It looks pretty realistic if I do say so myself.
Step 07:
This texture has many applications. Happy drawings!
